November 4th Teach In - It's Worse Than You Think!
It's Worse Than You Think... Where is the Bush administration taking our nation? Why MUST it be stopped?
Join us for an interactive, educational,
emergency Teach-in!
Saturday, November 4th
4:00 PM - 6:00 PM
University of Houston,
SEC Building, Room 201
Call 713-894-0932 for more information
Neither the full magnitude nor the staggering implications of the Bush regime are well understood. The Bush administration is currently seeking to dismantle our constituion and system of checks and balances. The Bush administration systematically lies about its actions, while the media allows them to frame the issues. The Bush administration lies about its agenda, while the media fails to accurately and fairly portray the actual state of things.
We currently face a grave emergency. The very nature of U.S. society and its relationship to other countries is being reshaped in a dreadful way by corrupt neocons before our very eyes. Yet the full implications of these sweeping changes are not widely understood, even among those who oppose the Bush administration. This MUST change!
YOU are cordially invited to join us for an afternoon of edifying education and insightful information. Everyone is welcome.
Join us for panels, speeches, networking, and lively discussion. We will also be presenting/screening footage from the Bush Crimes Commissions.

David Van Os Whistle-Stop Tour Coming to Houston 10/18
David Van Os is in the midst of his 254 county WHISTLE-STOP tour of Texas, and it is his desire to take his message to small town, rural Texas where he believes the roots of populism still survive. David’s 252nd Whistle-stop will be at the Harris County courthouse at 1001 Preston on Wednesday, October 18 at 4:00 p.m
In the tradition of Jim Hogg, the PEOPLE of Texas will finally have representation in the courts when David is elected, and corporations will be held accountable for breaking the law. David has a unique ability to communicate dynamically and effectively with people of all political persuasions and those who ascribe to no particular political party. When elected as Texas Attorney General, David will restore state government to the people who rightfully own it and will truly represent all Texans as the PEOPLE’S LAWYER.
David was born and raised in Kilgore, Texas, attended the University of Texas on scholarship and received his law degree from UT in 1976. He has been named as Texas “Super Lawyer” by Texas Monthly Magazine in 2003, 2004, and 2005. He now owns his own law firm in San Antonio where he champions constitutional law, labor, and civil rights
David will be discussing issues of relevance to Texans such as the Trans Texas Corridor and its impact on farmers/ranchers and the environment, the high price of gasoline, oil and gas company monopolization as well as insurance company monopolization and the high price of homeowner’s insurance in Texas. Ask David tough questions, and broadcast his answers on the air. You and your listeners will be impressed with David’s knowledge of these particular issues and others that directly affect Texans. He communicates with a straight shooting, firebrand oratory style that Texans appreciate and identify with.
If you would like to learn more about David and his historic Whistle-stop tour of Texas please visit his website at http://www.vanosfortexasag.com.

Impeachment Town Hall Meeting Featuring Ann Wright
Impeachment Town Hall Meeting
Sep 4 2006 - 1:00pm
Sep 4 2006 - 5:00pm
Tired of high crimes & misdemeanors in the White House, but don't know what to do about them?
On Labor Day, Sep. 4, join us for an
IMPEACHMENT TOWN HALL MEETING
with special guest and keynote speaker
ANN WRIGHT
Learn how to support the US Constitution
and achieve (non-violent, of course) regime change here in the US.
Ann Wright is a veteran and former diplomat who resigned from the US State Department because of our invasion of Iraq. She's a great speaker and very familiar with the lies leading up to the US invasion of Iraq and other impeachable offenses.
This is a non-partisan event. The emphasis will be on the impeachable offenses committed by George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, how to talk with people about those offenses in a way that will help them understand the necessity for impeachment, and what we as citizens can and should do about it. The goal is NOT to promote or bash a particular political party.
Protect the Constitution. Restore American values. Stop the lying, spying, and torture.
The program is still being worked out, so check back later for details. Besides words from Ann Wright and some others, we plan to show some videos related to impeachment, and hope to have a workshop on how to talk with your friends, neighbors, and co-workers about impeachment from a postive point of view -- standing up for values we can all relate to, including supporting the Constitution, against torture, etc.
Ride the bus:
Metro bus routes that go directly to the site: Nos. 48 and 40
Select either 40 or 48 to get the schedule and route map for those busses.
There is much at stake, and we need you to help save our democracy. Note that this is Labor Day, a holiday for most of you. After celebrating the gains we've made in this country because of organized labor, let's do some organizing to make sure our children and grandchildren can enjoy the benefits we've had from living in the US. As citizens in a democracy, let's try to preserve what's left of it for them.
Tables & Literature Progressive organizations are welcome to set up tables and/or to distribute literature to promote upcoming events and activities.
If you see counter-demonstrators, remember that we are people of peace, even if they do not understand what our government is doing to us and to the rest of the world. Do not engage counter-demonstrators if they want to argue. Smile and be friendly.
Several groups are teaming up to present a film series of
politically-oriented movies, and we hope you'll join us to relax and
enjoy yourself while getting a chance to discuss important issues in
an informal atmosphere, too. Bring flyers for events you'd like to
promote, too.
Feel free to forward this to others who may be interested -- it's open to all.
When:
Friday, Aug 25, 6:30 - 9:30 pm
(Fourth Friday of each month)
The movie sheds light on episodes of American foreign policy that
link our government to torture and other war crimes, and the arming
and training of terrorists, both at home and abroad. It connects
these horrors to each of us, with an intimacy that is both comforting
and at the same time unsettling. "The Time is Now" heralds a new
voice and a courageous new examination of America. This searing
political monologue exposes shocking discoveries in a way that is
part plea, part confessional, and part outcry. It emphasizes the
need for a U.S. Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
We'll have time for socializing (with refreshments) before and after
each film, so you can visit with others while relaxing. Invite your
friends and relatives who may not want to go to political meetings or
protests, as we want these to be fun events.
A discussion will follow each film, for those who can stay.
The evening's schedule:
6:30 PM Mix, mingle, munch, and mellow out with others. You are
welcome to pass out flyers for your favorite issues, events, and
candidates. You may bring drinks (BYOB) and food or snacks to share
if you wish (not required, though).
7:30 PM Movie begins - "The Time is Now" (78 minutes)
9:00 PM Discussion on movie and how it relates to current events.
$4 suggested donation, no one turned away
Location for the August film:

A conference call on HB1 and Education with led by Sherrie Matula 7/6
Sherrie Matula (candidate for State Representative, district 129) led a conference call attended by many bloggers and candidates on the negative impact of HB1. She was joined by Fellow State Representative candidates Chad Khan (district 126) , Diane Trautman (district 127), Ellen Cohen (district 134).
The consequences are dire, with the potential to bankrupt school districts, dissolve local control and devastate teacher morale. Check out these summaries of the conference from Brains and Eggs and Musings.
Fort Bend going away party for Tom DeLay 7/7
Friday night, Fort Bend Democrats held a going away party for Tom DeLay. Coming on the heels of the Sparks ruling that DeLay must stay on the ballot, there was a lot of interesting speculation about how the District 22 race will play out. It was encouraging to hear from Nick Lampson that his fundraising has been just as successful since DeLay tried to withdraw as it has been all along. See these photos and blog reports at

From 4:00 to 7:00 pm Thursday night, Houstonians have a great opportunity to think and talk about the future of our city. METRO is holding a federally-required "scoping" meeting for the Universities light rail line, one of five projects that will dramatically expand Houston's urban transit system.
The Universities line will somehow connect the University of Houston main campus to the Main Street line to Greenway Plaza to the Galleria and neighborhoods in between. Everyone who lives, works, shops, or plays in this corridor has a stake in the project. Tonight's meeting is the public's official opportunity to say where you think the rail line should go, what destinations it should serve, and what neighborhood and environmental impacts to watch out for. Don't miss the opportunity to participate.

Chris Mooney (author of "The Republican War on Science") speaks here June 22
Science has never been more crucial to deciding the political issues facing the country. On a broad array of issues, however, science and scientists have never had less influence with the federal government than today.
In The Republican War on Science, Chris Mooney ties together the disparate strands of the attack on science into a frightening account of our government’s increasing unwillingness to distinguish between legitimate research and ideologically driven pseudoscience.
Thursday, June 22 | 7 p.m. | Emerson Unitarian Church (1900 Bering Drive)
Mooney's evening lecture will expose the religious right’s dangerous War on Science. Come hear how you can help counter attacks against stem cell research, evolution and sex education. This event is free and open to the public. Mooney will be available after the presentation to sign copies of his book.
The 2006 Faith & Freedom Speaker Series brings discussion of important issues at the intersection of culture, religion and politics to communities across Texas. The Texas Freedom Network is pleased to offer all of these evening lectures free of charge.

June 19, 2006, will be the 141st anniversary of the arrival of the news of the Emancipation Proclamation to the shores of Texas (through Galveston on June 19, 1865).
David Van Os will mark the occasion by conducting a marathon Citizens' Filibuster for Freedom in Galveston on June 18 and 19.
"One of America's greatest presidents, Abraham Lincoln, struck an everlasting blow against tyranny when he issued the Emancipation Proclamation to liberate America from the scourge of human slavery. Today another president, disgracing the Republican Party name under which Lincoln got elected, and even worse, disgracing the Texas legacy that he claims, is establishing tyranny as governmental policy through actions such as unconstitutional wiretapping, prisoner torture, lying the nation into war, and helping corporate robber barons prey on the people.
Here in Texas, the junior partners that he left in charge in Austin follow their leader by looking the other way in response to these depredations. We the people of Texas demand respect for our rights and liberties.
Let your defiance of tyranny be heard. Join me in the Citizens' Filibuster for Freedom on June 18 and 19 in Galveston."
12:00 Noon, Sunday, June 18 Filibuster begins at Galveston City Hall, 823 Rosenberg Street, and continues all night
8:30 a.m., Monday, June 19 Attend the reading of the Emancipation Proclamation at Ashton Villa, 2328 Broadway Street
11:00 a.m., Monday, June 19 Join David in the Juneteenth Parade, beginning at 26th Street, two blocks from City Hall

Radnofsky “Twinkie Tour”
Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Barbara Ann Radnofsky stops in South Texas to showcase gifts for opponent
Houston, Texas. Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Barbara Ann Radnofsky will travel across South Texas beginning on Thursday, June 15 and will showcase a variety of gifts to her opponent at press conferences and receptions in Victoria, Refugio, Corpus Christi, Falfurrias, Mission, Brownsville.
At Radnofsky’s convention speech on Saturday, June 10, 2006, she presented a Virginia tote bag which will be given as a gift for her opponent, containing two cans of Alaskan wild salmon. The tote bag is intended as a useful item given her opponent’s recent decision to leave Texas and establish her main residence in Virginia. The Alaskan wild salmon was a thank-you from Alaskans for the vote that she cast on the transportation bill which benefited Alaska and shortchanged constituents in Texas.
Radnofsky promises several new gifts in the tote bag for her opponent, including Hostess Twinkies as mementos of the senior senator’s hostess activities for Tom DeLay and the corrupt K Street Project. Radnofsky will also discuss the efforts of South Texas veterans to obtain a needed veterans’ hospital, and present her opponent with mementos of her efforts to obstruct construction of the hospital. Radnofsky will discuss the issues Texans care about including the costs of corruption, health care, education, immigration, and veterans’ affairs.
Each event will feature a question and answer section. Media are invited to attend.
