On the ROADwomen

OK, stop thinking that.

Last night I attended the monthly ROADwomen meeting at which Nick Lampson spoke and took questions. He was joined by Gary Binderim, CD-02 candidate, and statehouse challengers Sherrie Matula and Janette Sexton. There were representatives from the campaigns of Diane Trautman, Mark McDavid, and Ellen Cohen as well as Barbara Radnofsky and David Van Os. The judicial candidates in attendance included Bill Connolly, Chuck Silverman, and Leora Kahn.

Stace Medellin and the roadtrippers from Kingwood were also in the audience.

This organization of powerful women is going to make a difference in the 2006 elections. Count on it.

"U.S. Health Care: Sicker Than Its Patients"

A presentation by Dr. Ana Malinow, sponsored by Sharpstown Democrats

Saturday October 15, 10 a.m. Bayland Community Center, 6400 Bissonnet

Ana Malinow was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and earned a BA from the University of California at Davis and a master's degree in Creative Writing before completing her medical education at Case Western Reserve Univesity. She completed residency in pediatrics at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital in Cleveland and practiced there as a pediatrician for 5 years, at a time when the patient to pediatrician ratio was 10,000:1.

Since moving to Houston with her family, she has been working in the Pediatric Emergency Center at the Ben Taub General Hospital, where most of her patients are uninsured.

Three years ago, Dr. Malinow and medical student Lauren Oshman co-founded "Health Care for All Texas," a group of individuals and organizations that promotes universal health care through education and policy setting. Last year they organized a photography tour in six cities across Texas called "Denied: The Crisis of America's Uninsured", to raise public awareness about the looming social crisis of Americans without health insurance.

In this one-hour presentation, the participant will learn about how the health-care system in the U.S. works and doesn't work, how it is financed and how much it costs, the kind of health care we get for our money, and how other countries provide universal health care for much less. Finally, the audience will be challenged to come up with a list of 5 guiding principles for a health-care system we can be proud of.

You are invited to attend this free seminar.

ROADwomen Rock!

Well over one hundred people gathered for the August 16th meeting of the River Oaks Area Democratic Women at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church Parish Hall on West Alabama. The ROADwomen had planned a lively and informative meeting, and attendees were not disappointed. Featured speakers city controller Anise Parker, attorney Mitchell Katine, and psychotherapist Tony Carroll shared their thoughts about the challenge posed by HJR6, the proposed "marriage amendment" to the Texas constitution.

ROADwomen president Muffie Moroney opened the meeting with an announcement about the safe return of state representative Rick Noriega from service in Afghanistan and an introduction of various club leaders and local candidates. She went on to recommend passages from the book Don't Think of an Elephant by George Lakoff that are pertinent to the gay marriage issue and to give an overview of the handout entitled "Biblical Marriage: A Message from the ROADwomen Executive Committee." In a vivid description of recent scenes in San Francisco and New York, Anise Parker recalled the long lines of same-sex couples, some of whom had sold their belongings to have the money to journey there, waiting for a chance to get married. Their determination revealed a deeply-felt "hunger to honor their relationships," said Anise, and she called for everyone to fight with her "to honor all familes."

With an extensive timeline of important court cases, Mitchell Katine provided historical context. He advised the audience that the most important thing they can do as advocates for equality is to talk about it with family, friends, and community groups. Building upon the ideas of the previous speakers, Tony Carroll offered a psychotherapist's perspective on gay marriage, with an emphasis on "the universal desire for authenticity and acceptance." The speakers answered questions, and ROADwomen vice president Charlotte Coffelt reminded everyone that George Lakoff's book offers insight into the Republicans' framing of this wedge issue.

The next meeting of the ROADwomen will be on Tuesday, September 20, 2005, at the same location. The featured speakers will be state representatives Alma Allen and Scott Hochberg, whose topic will be "How I Spent My Summer Vacation," or "The Three Stooges Tackle School Funding." This sounds like a program that no one will want to miss.

Volunteer at HCDP Headquarters

The Harris County Democratic Party is in need of additional office staff to fill several openings for the summer.

HCDP works on an all volunteer basis, and is totally dependent on the generosity of devoted individuals. Many regular volunteers have volunteered their time in the office for years.

Regular office hours are 9am to 5pm, Monday through Friday. There are two shifts, one from 9am to 1pm, and a second from 1pm to 5pm.

Regular staff volunteers volunteer one four-hour shift per week, either in the morning or afternoon. If you wish, you may work more than one shift. If you are unable to work regularly, you can also be a sub.

Duties involve answering the phones, making calls, some typing and light computer work, as well as various tasks as needed.

E-mail Sue Trapp, Office Staff Coordinator (m.r.trapp@worldnet.att.net) if you are interested in volunteering some of your time this summer.

Sue will schedule training sessions for new staff volunteers.

Oil Patch Democrats Launch Blog and Yahoo Group

The Oil Patch Democrats now have two online sites, a Yahoo list and a Blogspot blog:

You must sign up to read or receive mail from the Yahoo list. Mr. OPD himself, John Wm. Preston, will send out an invite to the current list to make the transition from the old email list to the new Yahoo list easier. You must have a (free) Yahoo mail account to join the group. To minimize email traffic, this list should only be used for announcements and alerts. You can also set up your account to not get email and only read the list online if you prefer. The Yahoo site also has a place to attach files, so it can serve as a reference section.

Anyone can read the blog without signing up or being logged in. This is where discussion happens. Hopefully we differentiate our site from other blogs by having insider informed discussion about oil and gas topics, helping to chart a progressive course for the industry, but a good rant about the Downing Street memo or the erosion of Constitutional rights is always welcome as well. Only moderators can post topics on the blog, but anyone can comment. If you want a new topic, email a moderator who will post it if appropriate. If you have frequent topics, ask to become a moderator. To post comments on a topic, you need to sign up. All blogspot blogs use the same signup, so you may already be signed up from a different blog. You may find that your username has already been chosen. Just use a nonsense username to sign up and set your display name to your preference. The username is only used to log in and the display name what is shown next to your comments.
