Texas Republican Platform 2006 for the Layman

This video provides a layman's view of the Texas Republican platform. A party's platform sets out in detail what the party is really all about. It is written by the party's most active and committed members and expresses their basic beliefs. Many of the policies are so radical that they would shock most people including political moderates and even many conversatives. When Republicans take office, they seize every opportunity to impose these policies on the American people.

Review this platform carefully and share it with your family and friends! Many thanks to the following individuals who authored this presentation!

Cohen and Wong to Debate

On October 12 at Rice University in McMurtry Auditorium, the Rice Young Democrats and Rice College Republicans will host Ellen Cohen, Martha Wong, and Mhair Dekmezian (who was invited at the request of the Wong campaign) for a debate for House District 134 in Houston. For ninety minutes, a panel of four Rice professors will ask the candidates questions about the race for the state legislature.

The debate is free and open to the public. Here's a map of Rice so you can figure out where to park. I'm looking forward to seeing you there.

What: State Legislative Debate between Ellen Cohen, Martha Wong, and Mhair Dekmezian

Join Batttleground Democrats in Boycott of Right Wing Radio Sponsors

From Battleground Democrats:

Both of the following statements are

TRUE:

First,
Right wing, hate-radio hypocrites like Rush Limbaugh, Michael Savage and Shaun Hannity are exercising their constitutional right when they call people like you and me traitors, communists, and fools, or when they imply that we may be homosexuals because we disagree with them.

Second,
Even though they have the right to spew such hate-filled idiocy, YOU have the right not to pay them for doing it!!!

Don’t believe right wing “talk show hosts” are saying such things?

Below are just a few examples.

Michael Savage: (Birth name: “Michael Weiner.”)

Such outbursts are nothing unusual for Savage/Weiner. Here are some other, recent quotes:

Rush Limbaugh: Limbaugh’s daily, 3-hour “show” consists almost entirely of him vilifying Democrats and glorifying and exalting Republicans. He continually accuses Democrats and others of being fools and communists. Many of his “bits” imply, or even state openly, that Democrats and others who disagree with him are homosexuals. Feminists are routinely accused of being lesbians. Limbaugh also makes the frequent claim that his opponents are attempting to destroy America.

Shaun Hannity: Hannity and his adoring fans continuously compliment each other for being “Great Americans”.

Unbelievable as it may sound the above statements are just a few, representative examples. The sad fact is, hundreds of such “talk show hosts” are saying these kinds of things and worse, at every hour of every day, all across this great nation of ours.

But how is it that you and I are paying them to churn out their hate-filled lies?

It’s simple, really. Savage/Weiner, Limbaugh, Hannity, and all the rest, make their money by selling airtime for commercials. When Democrats and others inadvertently purchase the products and services advertised in those commercials, a portion of the purchase price ends up in these “talk show hosts” pockets.

In effect, you and I are paying such “talk show hosts” to spew lies about us, lies which have been specifically designed to make people hate, fear and despise Democrats, progressives, environmentalists, and any others who dare to disagree with the extremist agenda of the far right wing of the Republican party.

But what companies would allow their advertising dollars to go to vicious liars like Limbaugh, Savage/Weiner, and Hannity?

Would you believe Boston Market, Arid Extra Dry, Gallery Furniture, Lasik Vision Institute, Blue Bell Ice Cream, Just Brakes, Lay’s Potato Chips, Wachovia, Net Zero, Home Depot, Discover Business Card and hundreds of other perfectly legitimate companies?

Unfortunately, it’s true.

What can be done about this disgusting situation? Here’s what we are asking:

Examine the current catalog of Hate Radio sponsors listed below.

If you are purchasing products or services from any of these companies, you should do the following three things.

Want to help us keep tabs on the professional liars and demagogues in the right wing, Hate Radio universe?

If you have a few minutes each week to help out, we sure can use you!

In the Houston area, the radio station that plays host to Limbaugh, Savage/Weiner, and Hannity is AM 950. We need volunteers to listen to this station, and when they make a hate-filled statement about Democrats or others, jot it down verbatim, along with the date, approximate time, and the identity of the person making the statement. After that, keep listening for a few minutes to see who is paying them that day by advertising on their program. Jot that information down too. After that, email everything to us at this web site.

We will post the best examples of their hate-filled diatribes on this site, along with a running list of the companies who are, in effect, paying them to say such things.

Ann Richards - RIP

We lost Ann Richards tonight. She was a great lady and a great Texan.

Former Texas Gov. Ann Richards dies

Associated Press

AUSTIN — Former Texas Gov. Ann Richards, the witty and flamboyant Democrat who went from homemaker to national political celebrity, died tonight at her home surrounded by her family after a battle with cancer, a family spokeswoman said. She was 73.

Richards was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in March and underwent chemotherapy treatments.

Richards had said she entered politics to help others - especially women and minorities who were often ignored by Texas' male-dominated establishment.

``I did not want my tombstone to read, 'She kept a really clean house.' I think I'd like them to remember me by saying, 'She opened government to everyone,' `` Richards told an interviewer shortly before leaving office in January 1995.

Richards served as Texas governor for one term. She lost her re-election bid to Republican George W. Bush.

Irony in Bush's word games

PRESIDENT Bush's speechwriters are masters of duplicity. He was right when he said in his Monday night speech that Americans didn't choose the war in Iraq. But Bush and the neocons certainly did choose it, as deliberately as any other war in world history was chosen.

It's an irony beyond belief that Bush would play word games on the anniversary of our most emotionally wrenching national disaster.

Americans deserve better.

Friday Funnies (don't worry; there'll be more on Sunday)

Happy Labor Day! Find a union member and tell them thanks for their forebearers, who fought to give us the 40-hour work week, paid vacation and holidays, health care, safe working conditions, and all the other things the corporations are now busy trying to take away by paying off the Republicans.
