Bush Address on Constitutional Amendment

Bennett Roth of the Houston Chronicle's Washington Bureau reports on Bush's Monday Address. (requires registration)

For the first time since the 2004 presidential campaign, President Bush delivered a live, prepared speech on his support for a ban on gay marriage Monday as the Senate opened debate on whether to amend the Constitution accordingly.

The president suggested he was forced to revisit the issue because some judges and local government officials are threatening to overturn state laws banning same-sex marriages.

Right from the horse's mouth:

"An amendment to the Constitution is necessary because activist courts have left our nation with no other choice," Bush told an audience of social conservative leaders in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building next to the White House.

The article mentions two Amendment backers in the Senate, Wayne Allard of Colorado, and our very own Repug, John Cornyn.

Then Tony Snow makes it interesting in the Monday Press Conference, as the Chronicle reports:

White House spokesman Tony Snow tried Monday to downplay the timing and significance of Bush's renewed interest in the amendment, calling the issue "overhyped."

"He's just meeting with people who share his viewpoint," said Snow, who added that he didn't know if Bush would make phone calls to press senators on the issue.

How is it possible to "overhype" a proposal to amend the Constitution of the United States? Either Bush is not really serious about the amendment, in which case he is playing trite political games with the Constitution, or else he is serious about the amendment, in which case, he is just a nut-case.

In other words, this just confirms what we already knew.

Clearly he's only trying to energize the Republican base, the hard-core. He must be under enormous pressure to shoot himself and his party in the foot.
