Cornyn vulnerable in '08?

Sure it's a little early for this, but it's not unwelcome news. Altho the Survey USA methodology leaves a bit to be desired in the scientific rigor department, the same survey process from Survey USA that found Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison is running a 26% lead in her favorable-unfavorable ratings in Texas (57% to 31%) also reveals that her junior colleague John Cornyn is barely flying ahead of his own unfavorbles.

In the April 2006 poll, Cornyn gets a job approval rating of only 41% against a disapproval rating of 38%. For a conservative Republican in a conservative state, for a low-profile politician in George Bush's home state, those are pretty ratty numbers. But Survey USA's tracking shows that Cornyn is a consistantly low performer where parallel sampling yields Hutchison fairly strong approval.

Cornyn in the media is generally described as a consistant supporter of Bush's policies, but his main schtick in Washington has mostly been to serve as the president's squawk box—an empty head who rarely thinks for himself or offers any genuine leadership on any signficant issue. Bush's numbers have gone up and, lately, down over Cornyn's tenure, but Cornyn himself seems to always be a poor performer. Apparently most Texans want a senator with a backbone. His numbers seem to be weakest among Hispanics, moderates, voters under age 35, and people in west Texas. All of which is good news, and food for thought after November.
