Marguerite Reed - Great Activist and Friend

Marguerite Reed and Leah BurrisAs some of you know, early last month, we lost one of our bloggers, Marguerite Reed (left, pictured with Leah Burris) to illness. In addition to leading the reading club on the blog, she was active on the steering committees of Democracy for Houston and the HCDP Communications group.

Marguerite ReedShe contributed to Democratic and Progressive causes in many ways. She was always available to help plan events, work party and DFH tables and take on just about any task. If you have picked up any buttons from HCDP or DFH, they are probably her handiwork.

Marguerite was a very private person and went out of her way to avoid sharing the seriousness of her illness with family and friends, so her passing was very sudden. She insisted there would be no memorial service or obituary.

Those of us who were fortunate enough to have her touch our lives and hearts will never forget Marguerite. I invite you to share your thoughts about Marguerite here.

Marguerite was an amazing activist, dedicating herself to everything she believed in and ultimately put her mind to. I am fortunate and honored to have known her and take comfort that she is in a better place. She will be missed!!! but I celebrate her life and passions with respect and thanks that our paths crossed.

Marguerite was an amazing woman, friend, and Democrat. She amazed us with her creativity, as she was always filled with new ideas. Marguerite led her life with excellence, and she set the bar higher in everything she did. She spearheaded Democracy for Houston's Books for Soldier program, coordinating and sending many boxes of books to our soldiers stations overseas. She volunteered her time to many progressive causes, including HCDP, KPFT, and DFH, among many others.

Marguerite is a shining example of what all Democrats should strive to be: compassionate, dedicated, knowledgeable, fun, reliable, and inspiring. I am lucky to have met her. I will miss her greatly.

Marguerite Reed will always be with me. She set the "gold standard" for Democratic activists in the Greater Houston Area. Heck, she set the standard for just about anywhere else!

Indeed, Marguerite could and would turn every simple political project/activity/event into an unimaginable work that deserved every ounce of praise. Simply put, she always put her Democratic heart and soul into every effort.

For those of us who were fortunate to have worked, played, laughed and cried with Marguerite... we will always have her high standards to measure our own selves by.

Marguerite Reed was a proud "yellow dog" Democrat. She lived her life with actions that remained true to her progressive spirit. May we all have the courage to follow her lead.

I am grateful to have been a part of Marguerite's political activity and look forward to sharing her spirit with others.

What Marguerite gave us will never be lost, for each of us who knew her are better people for the experience.

When I remember Marguerite I think about how she loved coming up with zingers and slogans for her buttons and how we were always amazed by her creativity. (Although she was usually a quiet soul, She would often surprise us when we least expected it by throwing in what she referred to as her "snarky" button slogans once in a while....those were always the best sellers!)

Marguerite, to say you will be missed would not even begin to describe the loss we will feel in your absence....but even more evident will be the strength of your presence we will feel in everything we do.

I am honored to have know you Marguerite...

I got to know Marguerite on the blog here, and only met her in person after reading her words for several months.

Her sense of outrage at our Republican leadership -- and the lazy corporate media which enables their outrageous behavior -- didn't come across at all in person. I found her quiet, unassuming, yet focused and determined (like so many of us).

I'll miss her sly, rapier-like wit, both on these pages as well as face-to-face.

Vaya con Dios, Senora Reed.

My very brief friendship with Marguerite was mostly via email and I had the honor of meeting her briefly once in person. She was extremely supportive of Gold Star Families for Peace and one of the first in the Houston area to lend her support. My only regret is that there wasn't time to get to know her better before she left us.

To Marguerite's family I send my love and condolences. I hope they find comfort in knowing how well loved their Marguerite was.

I had the pleasure of working with Marguerite at the DFH chapter she and I belonged to and served.

I have not meet her equal before or since. I can't add much to what has been written, except this. She was a person of quiet competence, who did not speak much, but spoke volumes when she did raise her voice. Her slogans , her unflagging devotion to progressive causes , the uplift she gave to me whenever we worked together will never be forgotten. It says something about this marvelous woman that we at DFH will probably have to have 3 or 4 different people to take up the work she regularly accomplished by herself.

Good-bye my friend. I know there is a place reserved for you in the hereafter , and your work will be the only recommendation you will need to enter.
