Hittner, Clutterbuck, or neither?
This is a shout-out to our conservative readers (and bloggers).
Though Houston's municipal elections are officially non-partisan, everybody who does a little research can figure out where the candidates stand. And I don't live in District C, so the runoff election on December 10 between George Hittner, who's been a GOP staffer and activist for various Republicans and Anne Clutterbuck, who worked for both Bill Archer and John Culberson isn't one I get to have a say in (at least at the ballot box).
But I'd like to hear why those of us on the left should vote for one of these two candidates -- without the tired platitudes, please, about potholes or flooding being non-partisan.
Personally, if I had a vote in this race I would be inclined not to cast it -- and I will be voting, because two good Democrats, Sue Lovell and Jay Aiyer, are in the runoff for At-Large 2.
There hasn't been much talk about the race in the conservative blogosphere that I can find: my Yahoo search of "hittner clutterbuck" produced just over a hundred hits, the first ten of which were four of Houston's lefty blogs (with multiple hits), including this one you're reading; two Chronicle articles on the race, one non-partisan political analysis website and one right-wing blog with a post made in in May, six months ago. Google produced a similar result.
I also remember that when Kuffner and Wyeth and Wall and others hosted all candidates in a face-to-face forum, that the righty bloggers were MIA that day. I thought that was puzzling then, and I think it's odd that there still aren't many posts from Republicans on this election, but no matter...
All the good folks who voted for Mark Lee and Herman Litt might want to know who to vote for on December 10th. Would someone like to give them a reason to?
(And as always, be polite.)

I am leaning toward Clutterbuck, but by no means is that a firm decision. Hittner strikes me as inexperienced and ambitious, a combination I trust in no one; I like Clutterbuck's show of interest in clean air, which even Mark Lee failed to show. Also, her association with Bill Archer gives her a more moderate cast than Hittner's associations. But appearances can be deceiving; I, too, would love to hear more from folks with real experience working with either.

While we wait for a Republican to show up with an opinion, here's some news from the Chron:
Anne Clutterbuck and George Hittner, who will meet in a runoff in District C, ran neck-and-neck Nov. 8. She received 20 percent of the vote to his 19.8 in a seven-way race.Last week, Hittner, a lawyer, announced new endorsements from former Houston school board member Laurie Bricker, philanthropist and automobile dealer Alan Helfman and U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council chairman Fred Zeidman.
Clutterbuck, a lawyer and president of Southampton Civic Club, won the endorsement of Mark Lee, who placed third Nov. 8. She could benefit from her grass-roots contacts as a civic club leader, Stein said, but he's not forecasting the result.
"These are impossible races to predict," he said. "They are really street affairs."

I read this blog daily. Im in sw houston and was active in the litt campaign. Im voting for clutterbuck. In fact I now have extensive contact with her and her office. I find her very impressive. she knows what she is doing. she knows the issues and is moderate on at least one key social issue-gay rights. I went to a district c debate at the jcc and hittner really turned me off. his pitch is the same-he went to eh best schools and he is endorsed by rick perry etc.. oh-and he emphasized using westbury patrol cars more for rounding up the "illegals." clutterbuck was very personable, talked about clean air initiatives, willow water hole park, and told us her efforts to stop the stench comming from the city's water treatment center on braeswood. Im going for clutterbuck hands down and I hope many of u consider so too. the dems will decide this race I think........

I'd been impressed with both Hittner and Clutterbuck personally (albeit for different reasons), but a bit more favorable towards Anne when looking a bit in depth in terms of policy and experience. I ran into her tonight and will be at least working on a "Democratic case" for her over the holiday weekend to post over at my lil ol' blog.

George must win - he is not inexperienced - look at his background. It does not mean that a young guy must know less. He is much brighter than many older guys in politics I know. Hope he could win.

The best (wo)man clearly won! There hasn't been a landslide like this in District C in many election cycles. Have to go back at least 3 maybe 4 or more councilmembers to find the overwhelming neighbor support that Clutterbuck got.
