"U.S. Health Care: Sicker Than Its Patients"

A presentation by Dr. Ana Malinow, sponsored by Sharpstown Democrats

Saturday October 15, 10 a.m. Bayland Community Center, 6400 Bissonnet

Ana Malinow was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and earned a BA from the University of California at Davis and a master's degree in Creative Writing before completing her medical education at Case Western Reserve Univesity. She completed residency in pediatrics at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital in Cleveland and practiced there as a pediatrician for 5 years, at a time when the patient to pediatrician ratio was 10,000:1.

Since moving to Houston with her family, she has been working in the Pediatric Emergency Center at the Ben Taub General Hospital, where most of her patients are uninsured.

Three years ago, Dr. Malinow and medical student Lauren Oshman co-founded "Health Care for All Texas," a group of individuals and organizations that promotes universal health care through education and policy setting. Last year they organized a photography tour in six cities across Texas called "Denied: The Crisis of America's Uninsured", to raise public awareness about the looming social crisis of Americans without health insurance.

In this one-hour presentation, the participant will learn about how the health-care system in the U.S. works and doesn't work, how it is financed and how much it costs, the kind of health care we get for our money, and how other countries provide universal health care for much less. Finally, the audience will be challenged to come up with a list of 5 guiding principles for a health-care system we can be proud of.

You are invited to attend this free seminar.
