US Falling Behind in Stem Cell Research

"Other nations' governments are more supportive of stem cell research, and the political climate surrounding the issue is less heated than in U.S., said Barnett Suskind, an American who is chief executive of the Institute.

"All of the science that is yet to be discovered is not happening in the U.S.," Suskind said. "We are talking billions of dollars of research that will happen elsewhere because the world is demanding it."

As companies in nations such as South Korea, Singapore and Australia make major advances in stem cell research, fears have grown in the U.S. that scientists and investment capital will flee overseas, causing the nation to lose its edge as the world's dominant biotechnology force."

The Republicans – who are complete slaves to the religious right and their anti-science agenda – will do nothing to help the US remain competitive.  They don’t care about the high-paying jobs stem cell research could create.  They don’t care about the investment opportunities available or the lives this research could save.  All they care about is the US becomes a good Christian nation that reads the Bible while we flip burgers at McDonalds.

Democrats must start to take the initiative with this issue?  Why?  Because if we don’t, we will fall forever behind in this new industry.  We will lose the jobs this new industry will create.  We will become a third world nation devoid of scientific discovery.

This is a great wedge issue for the Democrats to use in the 2006 elections.  Every state can put a stem cell funding initiative on its ballot and the Democratic candidates can say they are for creating the jobs of tomorrow today.

We will lose jobs in stem cell research and other cutting edge scientific fields, yet our President makes speeches about giving equal time in science instruction to evolution and intelligent design. Yep, intelligent design should arm us well for competition with the Koreans, Indians, and Chinese.

Intelligent Design -- what garbage.
