New Precinct Activation Tool: Chick-Flick Night and Solidarity Slumber Party

Victoria Hawkins and Debbie Havert hosted a Democratic "Ladies' Big Chill Slumber Party" at Debbie's lovely home on Saturday night, July 30th. Tasty barbecue and lively political conversation preceded an all-night chick-flick marathon, but the films were neither romantic comedies nor melodramatic tearjerkers. Instead, the ladies enjoyed the feelings of solidarity inspired by The Sisters of '77, a documentary about the historic Women's Rights Convention held right here in Houston almost three decades ago.

Thus, the stars of the early evening were Barbara Jordan, Ann Richards, Lady Bird Johnson, Bella Abzug, and other trailblazers. Then, with President Bush's current and future Supreme Court nominations in mind, the ladies selected other films that sparked discussion of our endangered rights, such as Vera Drake and Iron-Jawed Angels.

A good time was had by all, and as our hostesses observed, this type of party could serve as one model for precinct outreach: educational, yes, but also just plain fun!

It was a blast! Thank you Victoria for planning, Deb for hosting, and Marguerite for blogging about it. The younger women in the group were excited at the opportunity to discuss these issues with the other ladies who were born before Roe v. Wade. And while "we've come a long way," there's lots more work to do.

Special thanks to the wonderful guys (Deb & Victoria's husbands) who helped set up, cooked, took photos, then left us ladies to enjoy the evening.

Hey, I was there at the old Colliseum in '77. I can share a great story about being in a mens room, standing at the recepticle.....when a hardy band of young women barged in and announced that they were "liberating" the mens room. I just blithly went about finishing my business and said on the way out..."It's all yours !". Truly on of the great memories of my otherwise pretty boring life.
