The Bush Republicans will make another run at dismantling Social Security Insurance. Recently some R's staged a dog and pony show in Washington shredding Social Security Statements (of fake statements, for all I know). Not only is this a losing policy on principle, it's a losing policy in terms of tactics.
Mark Schmitt makes a really smart post on framing the safety net, not in terms of income equality, rather in terms of insurance. If this is a such a great tactic what about the young "Casino Generation"?
"Sure, plenty of young people never think about the future -- 'we live for just these 20 years' and all that -- but perhaps that's just because it's terrifying."
Don't forget we are winning the issue on SSI. Schmitt makes the money quote:
"The danger in winning on Social Security is that liberals will forget that it's about more than just that one program, and that we still need to answer the question about real economic security."
This is a line worth pursuing: the right principles and the right tactics.
