Kellen's Open Letter to Meyerland Dems

Subject: [Meyerland_Area_Dems] Why are there only 584 Dems keeping hcdp running?
Would it surprise you to hear that out of the hundreds of thousands of Democrats here in Harris County, less than 600 are sustaining members of the Harris County Democratic Party? It surprised me, it shocked me, and it motivated me to do something about it!
We can sit and ask ourselves why till we're blue in the face. There are probably many reasons why people haven't signed up. Perhaps no one has asked them to join. Perhaps they joined in the past and didn't know they had to renew. Perhaps they were members at one time, then moved and their membership expired. Or perhaps they had no idea who keeps the lights on and the phones in service or how they pay the rent on the office space...etc.
WE DO!!!!! Collectively and individually, our contribution to the party is what keeps those office doors open! So, how do you join? Go to www.hcdp.org and print out the application or apply on line.
I guarantee, it's a one-time thing if you choose to have them take out $10 a month, you will never have to fill out any more paperwork....EVER AGAIN! Unless you change banks :)
I am making a plea to all Meyerland Area Democrats (whether you are a member of our club or not) to become a sustaining member of the Harris County Democratic Party today!
I will have forms at our next meeting on August 15 in case you are unable to get the form from their website. I would like to proudly say to Gerry Birnberg that Meyerland Area Democrats have the highest number of sustaining members out of all the area clubs, and that Meyerland Area Democrats are doing their part to keep our party strong and productive!
Please help us get there.
In democratic unity,Kellen Wilson
president, Meyerland Area Democrats Club
You go, Kellen!! Our goal is 1000 sustaining members. We can do it!
Now, That's what I'm talking about!

We depend on local monies ONLY, to sustain the county party. All funds that are contributed to the state and national parties DO NOT trickle back to us. We have to rely on ourselves to "keep the lights on." That's why it is SO IMPORTANT for the GROWTH of the Sustaining Membership program... it keeps the party "running."
Remember, the "the other party" has vast financial resources and "deep pockets" to rely on with regularity. We, Democrats, have to rely on the grassroots for our support. For as little as $10.00 a month, for an individual Sustaining Membership, you too can contribute to the efforts to take our local party to the next level.
You can go to the local party's website: hcdp.org and become a Sustaining Member online. Or, you can print the application from the website and mail your canceled blank check for automatic monthly withdrawals of the amount you designate to the Harris County Democratic Party.
Kellen is a Sustaining Member. I applaud her efforts! As President of the Meyerland Dems, she is being a leader that supports the local party both as a volunteer and a financial backer.
Hopefully, all Democratic club & organization leaders in Harris County realize the importance of Kellen's call to join the local party in its Sustaining Membership program.
We can all talk about what needs to happen. Until we each take RESPONSIBILITY into our own hands and INVEST our dollars in the local party, it will be difficult to expect the party to GROW and achieve its goals.
Please join those of us who have made a COMMITMENT to INVEST in our party and support its efforts, financially, to move to the next level in Harris County. Be a leader! Become a Sustaining Member of the Harris County Democratic Party.

As I am getting ready for our move to Oregon, I can't tell you how PROUD I am of Kellen, Phillip, Leif, and this party, for its commitment to raise enough money to continue turning things around for Harris County. I can remember when the Sustaining Membership progam was an idea from former HCDP Chair Sue Schechter, on how we could raise some "continuous" money to keep us going. Now it is really becoming the backbone of our party. And, of course, with growing financial support we can do more. It is as simple as that. I can't wait to read some time soon that in, of all places, Houston, Texas, the Democratic Party has started replacing Republicans in elected offices. And so goes the country.
Thanks to all of you that are continuing to build for the future of the Harris County Democratic Party!

I'm still a newbie to the HCDP. I first became a volunteer, and after seeing the work of the party, I decided to become a sustaining member.
Ten dollars a month to become a sustaining member is not a burden for most of us. That's two lattés and a slice of pound cake. That's two value meals at a junk food hut. That's two margaritas...which you can make better at home.
Being Democrats, we should understand that some among cannot afford even ten dollars a month. Some among us cannot afford to pay for the pay events we sponsor. We need to have some free events, like the Precinct teach-in this Saturday.
For those who can afford ten bucks/month, just do it today! Second, how many times do you make the Dem pitch and someone asks, "What can I do?" You can be volunteer or you can become a sustaining member of the HCDP. I have a few friends have the money and are sympathetic. They should be sustaining members. They should do it so we don't have to embarrass the people who can't afford it. We need people who don't have money. That's why the Democrats who can afford it need to become sustaining members right now.
