The Downing Street Minutes Controversy Heats Up

John Conyers has already gathered over 110,000 signatures for his letter of inquiry to President Bush, regarding the Downing Street Memo:.

As many of you are aware, a classified memo was recently disclosed in Great Britain that I believe has serious ramifications for the integrity of the United States Government. Dubbed the "Downing Street Memo," but actually comprising the minutes of a meeting of Prime Minister Tony Blair and other top British government officials, the memo casts serious doubt on many of the contentions of the Bush Administration in the lead up to the Iraq war. With over 1,600 U.S. servicemen and servicewomen killed in Iraq, the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Iraqis, and over $200 billion in taxpayer funds going to this war effort, we cannot afford to stand by any longer.

The new target is 250,000 signatures, so if you haven't added your signature to this demand for an explanation, please do so today at johnconyers.com.

As I write this, C-Span's Washington Journal is discussing the DSM. If you have a chance to catch the repeat of the discussion during the day today, it's well worth watching. The vitriole from the right-wing callers is sobering, and it's alarming that it's taken this long for the DSM to get this kind of attention. Steve Cobble of http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/ is doing a great job rebutting WizBang's Kevin Aylward.

SouthCoastToday reports that John Kerry will jump into the fray on Monday:

"When I go back (to Washington) on Monday, I am going to raise the issue," he said of the memo, which has not been disputed by either the British or American governments. "I think it's a stunning, unbelievably simple and understandable statement of the truth and a profoundly important document that raises stunning issues here at home. And it's amazing to me the way it escaped major media discussion. It's not being missed on the Internet, I can tell you that."

Congratulations to Rep. Al Green for signing the "Conyers Letter" re: demanding Bush explain the Downing Street Minutes. Once again, the Congressional Black Caucus and the Progressive Caucus are leading Congress and the Democratic Party in demanding accountability of the Bushivicks in their deception and fraud in taking us to War on false pretenses. Gene Green, silence is complicity.
