Houston Reporter Reveals Bush's Real Reason for Invading Iraq
In an interview with investigative journalist Russ Baker, veteran Houston reporter Mickey Herskowitz told about several lengthy conversations he had with George W. Bush in 1999. Herskowitz was preparing to write a campaign biography of "W" commissioned by the Bush family. In those conversations, "W" revealed his true reason for invading Iraq. Yes, in 1999, a full year before he was "selected" President of the United States, and two years before the events of 9/11 ... and independently of the Project for a New American Century folks, Bush had sketched out his plans for invasion, and he was not thinking about WMDs, nor about oil.
That other canard about Bush's desire to seek revenge against Saddam for his threats against Bush the Elder was also just that, a canard. The real reason for the invasion and the consequent deaths of tens of thousands was politics pure and simple.
In his 1999 talks with Herskowitz, who was later fired because his biography of "W" was turning out to be too truthful, Bush said: "One of the keys to being seen as a great leader is to be seen as a Commander-in-Chief. My father had all of this political capital built up when he drove the Iraqis out of Kuwait and he wasted it. If I have a chance to invade ..., if I had that much capital, I'm not going to waste it. I'm going to get everything passed that I want to get passed and I'm going to have a successful presidency."
In other words, we went to war for Bush's immediate political gain, as well as to secure him a lofty perch in the history books. All of this dovetails perfectly with remarks by Karl Rove overheard just before the 2002 elections. It also adds a new dimension to the Downing Street memo/s.
