Friday Document Dump - June 3, 2005 edition

The government has a cute habit of releasing documents with embarrassing content on Friday evenings, to avoid widespread coverage. It's not looking like last last night's dump will succeed in flying under the radar. From Yahoo News:

WASHINGTON - U.S. military officials say no guard at the Guantanamo Bay prison for terror suspects flushed a detainee's Quran down the toilet, but they disclosed that a Muslim holy book was splashed with urine. In other newly disclosed incidents, a detainee's Quran was deliberately kicked and another's was stepped on.

This, despite the fact that the previous week, "US investigators conceded Thursday that there was mishandling of the Koran but contend it was mostly inadvertent and deny that one had been put in a toilet." Okay so the Quran wasn't placed in a toilet. That part is true. It's kind of hard to argue that urinating on the Quran was inadvertent.

How have we gotten to the point where there is a national debate over the difference between flushing a religious book down the toilet and urinating on it? Callers to C-Span today actually defended Quran abuse and compared it to art that desecrates Christian artifacts, which I agree is in bad taste, as if one justifies another. Quran abuse was conducted by military personnel in our name. I'm horrified.

The NYT gives the following shaggy dog story:

"The splashing of urine was among the cases described as inadvertent. It was said to have occurred when a guard urinated near an air vent and the wind blew his urine through the vent into a detainee's cell. The detainee was given a fresh uniform and a new Koran, and the guard was reprimanded and assigned to guard duty that kept him from contact with detainees for the remainder of his time at Guantánamo, according to the military inquiry."

This quibbling over whether we the people of America, represented by our military and hired contractors oficiating over Guantanamo and Abu Gurab, pissed on or flushed a Quran sickens me. Where there is smoke there is fire folks. There is more than ample evidence from human rights groups that we are abusing prisoners held without due process.
What sickens me even more is the utter silence of most of our local Congressional delegation, save one, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, on this insane and immoral "war". We are seing symptoms of a larger national illness. We have lost our moral compass and our clear judgement. We have become what we profess to abhorr..............human rights abusers, liars and killers. And we are all responsible. We have a responsibility as the opposition Party to speak up. Yet, when have you heard those we have elected to represent us in Congress speak up and say NO, not in our name? And where is your outrage?

I'm not defending anything we've done in Guantanamo--there are no words to tell how abhorrent our behavior has been--but if we had only our own senators to appeal to, look what a situation we'd be in: if you want to email them, you have to check a category."Outrage" is not on their list of categories. So our only recourse is to call them. When we call them, we have no way of knowing if the message we delivered was received by them. So it seems to me that what we have to do is call them by the hundreds, over and over, and tell whoever answers hundreds of times over that we're outraged that these atrocities are being committed and that they are being committed in our name and then being denied by the lying, criminal Republican administration that pretends to represent us to the world.
We need only look at the Watergate trash being currently turned over to see how destructive a lying, cheating, conniving president and his puppeteers/henchmen can be to the well-being of the country. When that criminal born-again- Christian Charles Colson decries the fact that Mark Felt didn't go to the President with his suspicions, you can see what situation we're in: do we report Bush & Co. to OUR SENATORS? Don't forget, if you're not too young to know about it, that Charles Colson once said he'd walk over his own grandmother to serve Nixon. (This country has produced, God help us, more than one Karl Rove--just not quite so smart). We need also to remember that some wise man once said that the only way for evil to prevail is for good men (and women) to do nothing. Please God, let's not be caught doing nothing.
