"Freedom Fries" GOP Congressman quits on Iraq
I find myself speechless -- well, nearly -- following the interview with Rep. Walter Jones of North Carolina on "This Week" just now.
The Republican Congressman, a member of the House Armed Services committee, the guy who compelled the Capitol cafeteria to rename two of its offerings "Freedom Fries" and "Freedom Toast", will next week send a letter to the White House calling for a 'date certain' withdrawal of US troops from Iraq.
When asked on whom he blamed the failures of the Iraq War --and was prodded by Stephanopoulis to blame Rumsfeld, or Bush -- he said:
"I blame the neoconservatives in the runup prior for providing bad information to the administration."
I cannot say I have ever heard a Republican use the word 'neoconservative' like that.
Rep. Jones apparently came to his change of heart after writing letters to the families of the fallen (and receiving letters back from them), and after attending a funeral for a soldier at Camp LeJeune, who among his survivors left twins he never saw.
The finger's out of the dyke, folks. When a GOP congressman jumps off the war bandwagon -- the one, incidentally, Joe Biden is still on -- it's the beginning of the end.
There's no transcript up yet at ABC News.com, but when there is, I'll post it.

Good post, thanks PD, I missed that this morning. We Democrats keep thinking that it is only a matter of time before the "unholy" alliance of big business, and religious extremist Republicans, breaks down. What the BB Repugs don't understand, but might be beginning to, is that they have made a pact with the devil, who ironically think that God is totally on THEIR side. And that these fanatics must do anything to make His(their) prophesy happens. The true zealots don't care about such secular issues as social security, healthcare, environmental destruction, education, war, or world opinion. God is going to take them all up anyway, as soon as they make sure the rapture happens. The ONLY reason they care at all about Israel.
Fortunately for us, the rich Republicans DO care, at least, monetarily about the future. So now they have to figure out how to keep a majority and still save their portfolios.
Meantime, any sane, but not rich, Republicans are trying to figure out what happened. We Democrats must give them a home with issues that we know they DO care about (see above). And let big business and the nuts take each other out.

Crooks and Liars has a link to the video of the interview. This is the same report I saw yesterday morning which prompted this post.
Transcripts of Sunday broadcasts are, according to ABCNews.com, not posted until the following Friday.

Thanks for posting the link PDiddie. I missed that this Sunday. It's certainly refreshing to hear a Republican fault the neoconservatives and their misinformation for the war in Iraq. I certainly would like to see a timetable for withdrawal. I don't know how long it would take, some say 8 to 10 months, others close to 2 years, but Bush's war is turning into one big quagmire. I can't wait to hear the fallout when Representative Jones sends his letter to Bush. At least there is a Republican that still has a conscience.

Sincere conservatives may FINALLY be waking up to the fact that the "neoconservatives" aren't "conservative" at all.

Regarding Rep. Jones' comment:
"I blame the neoconservatives in the runup prior for providing bad information to the administration."
Once again, we have a Rethug who refuses to lay the blame squarely at the feet of Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Rice, Feith etc. The intelligence wasn't "bad", people. The fascists in power KNEW Saddam didn't have WMD. They knew he was no threat to the United States. They knew he had NOTHING to do with 9-11. This invasion of Iraq was started merely to gain U.S. control of the oil reserves, pure, plain and simple.
How nice of Rep. Jones to have a "change of heart" about the invasion after reading letters from soldiers' families and writing letters of condolence to same families. If that sorry son of a bitch hadn't lined up lock step behind the Bush administration nobody would be writing letters or receiving letters from anybody!
It isn't REFRESHING to me to "finally hear a Republican fault the neoconservatives and their misinformation for the war in Iraq". Wake up, Marc. Republicans DON'T HAVE A CONSCIENCE, buddy. They are motivated by greed and power.
Obviously, we also have some Democrats in Congress who are still on the "we have to stay in Iraq and clean up the mess we made" bandwagon. As far as I'm concerned, they can switch over to the Rethug party. Democrats MUST define themselves as POLAR OPPOSITES to Rethugs. I'm sick and tired of Republican lite Democrats who are scared shitless to take a stand on anything for fear they may jeopardize their chances to win re-election or jeopardize their chances at a run for the presidency i.e. Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton etc.
We don't need a timetable for withdrawal in Iraq. We need to get our soldiers out of Iraq NOW. Their presence there is viewed as an occupation, which it is, and is making matters worse. The United States and a coalition of nations i.e. the UN should make reparations to the Iraqi people for all the death and destruction and allow those people to begin rebuilding their country. Of course, the Bush cabal has no intention of EVER leaving that country and giving up control of that oil, so the Iraqis are screwed for the foreseeable future.
The invasion of Iraq and future invasions of Middle Eastern countries are all about controlling the oil and natural gas reserves as well as allowing the United States corporations to control third world countries and global commerce.
This invasion has NEVER been about democratizing Iraq or ridding the world of an evil tyrant. We have our own evil tyrant(s) sitting in the White House. Bush and his cohorts in crime are 1000 times worse than Saddam Hussein ever dared to be.
We have a sociopathic, retarded monkey as president who is told what to do by evil, fascist murderers. If democracy needs to be spread anywhere it needs to be spread HERE in the United States because we sure as hell don't have it anymore.
Don't sit around waiting for other Rethugs to "come to their senses", folks. These assholes know what the Bush administration is up to. The only reason some are speaking up now is because a large majority of the American people have decided to remove their heads from their asses and take a look around at what is really going on in Iraq with regard to more and more dead American soldiers. If you think a large majority of the American people really give a shit about a bunch of dead and maimed Iraqis then you've got another think coming.
The so called finger might be out of the dyke, but I don't believe our soldiers will be leaving Iraq anytime soon. The members of government in this country and the people of this country seem to have short memories with regard to getting involved in quagmires overseas. The lure of global hegemony just seems to be too strong an urge to ignore for many in power.
So, Mr. Freedom Fries/Toast can kiss my white ass right in the hole. His words fall on deaf ears.
