Activist Events for July
Here's a short listing of some mark-your-calendar items coming next month:
On Satuday, July 9 a Peak Oil Mini-Conference will be held from 1-5 p.m @ First Unitarian Universalist Church, 5200 Fannin. Discuss the adjustments our oil-dependent economy will have to make. A showing of "The End of Suburbia" plus workshops and open space conferencing. Suggested donation $5; contact Don Cook at (713)705-5594 or Alfred Molison at (713) 726-9009.
The Campaign for a National Majority will have an organizing event in Bellaire at the home of Kathy Dreyfus and Jim Grotta, 4555 Elm Street, on Tuesday July 19. CNM is a grassroots effort focusing on achieving winning races for Democrats, starting with state elections. Their goal is to build a "farm team" of Democrats who can win statewide and national elections. Click on their site above to learn more and RSVP.
Don't forget about the "Art for Life's Sake" event on Saturday, July 16.
And on Saturday July 23rd, Helping Democrats Get Elected will have an organizational meeting from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at Pappas Burger Restaurant (in the party room), 5815 Westheimer Rd, 77057 (between Fountain View & Chimney Rock). Talk about upcoming city elections and the candidates, and get more information about the statewide 2006 elections and campaigns. We will organize and set up some committees. Join us for some tasty food and an important meet-up.

I recommend Twilight in the Desert by Matt Simmons. He is currently an energy advisor to Dubya, but Dubya hasn't done anything to indicate he's taking any advice - anymore than he was listening to Richard Clarke, for example.
Short version: The Saudi oil fields are aging, therefore they will produce less, and the faster we try to produce there, the less oil we will yield in the long run. (Super K-zones, rock formations with super-permeability, are both a blessing and a curse. The permeability which makes them ideal for maintaining high rates of oil flow, also makes the fields rate sensitive: the faster you produce oil, the more likely you will compromise the oil pocket with water.)
Oil will be more expensive to produce and there are no current prospects for discovering supergiant fields we will need to keep pace with current demand, much less with increasing demand.
I've never even studied geology, so I hope those more knowledgable will correct any mistakes.

Matthew R. Simmons is the president of Simmons and Company International, an investment banking firm headquartered locally; he is prominent in the film "End of Suburbia" and also served on the energy task force Dick Cheney commissioned (the minutes of which the Supreme Court recently determined will forever remain a secret).
You can order a copy of the book jon boyd references in his comment at the link above.

I don't know his politics, but he also is connected to Bill White.
I have a borrowed copy, but I heard Brazos Bookstore sells it.

The Campaign for a National Majority event now has a featured speaker: former Congressman Nick Lampson.
Light refreshments will be served, and while the organization appreciates donations, this event is not a fundraiser. RSVP by Thursday, July 14 to Elizabeth Cohen at 713-664-5055 or Courtney Weiner at weiner@nationalmajority.org.
