Texas political bloggers and Chris Bell

all got on the same party line last night to talk about his almost-official campaign for Governor.

I posted about it here. So did Greg. And so did a couple of others, live-as-it-happened.

Visit Chris' website for a podcast or to sign up for a House Party on June 12 (that's when we'll be celebrating the anniversary of the ethics complaint filed against Tom DeLay).

And it won't cost no $250 a plate, neither.

I ran across this site while looking for the meaning of "Target Zero" There's and environmental program by that name in Canada. After reading a few posts, I thought I'd see how supportive of political candidates some of the more vocal people are. Interestingly enough, none of them donated a single penny to a candidate for national office. I think that the saying, "put your money where your mouth is" is appropriate. Talk is cheap. If you really support a candidate, she/he needs financial support these days. So, it's not very polite, but put up or tone down the rhetoric a bit.

For your information, Populist Democrat, if you are referring to me, my husband and I donated to Wesley Clark's campaign, John Kerry's campaign, Richard Morrison's campaign, John Martinez' campaign and possibly a few others.

I know who we sent money to, so with regard to Ron and me, your post is full of shit.

I'm not sure who you're talking about either, Pop, but it ain't me, as I donated ... let's just say 'more than $100' each to John Kerry and Wesley Clark and Howard Dean (and more to state and local candidates including Richard Morrison and Nick Lampson and David Van Os).

Really, if you're going to call people out about how much money they give, why don't you summon the courage to do so by name, and while you're at it, go ahead and list your own contributions just so we know you're not talkin' outta your hat.

Of course you won't find my political contributions listed under "PDiddie"...

Poppy, be sure you know what the data you are looking at represents. Contributions under $200 generally don't make the list. Also, I've noticed that searching now only shows contributions from the General election and not the primaries. When I search my name now, all I see is one donation to ACT, whereas pre-convention donations to Dean, Clark, Kerry, Doggett, Morrison, Obama etc that used to show up no longer do. I also made a dozen or so $50 donations to various candidates that never showed up. And of course, actual time spent volunteering on campaigns, while much more valuable, is not recorded anywhere.

As one who is involved to a certain extent in political finances and who personally knows many of the people that post here, I want to take issue with the posting by Populist Democrat. These people for the most part have contributed to political campaigns and local parties. (as mentioned by Ralph, only contributions over $200 show up on the reports).
But even more important these people have a passion for politics and our government. Yes, maybe at times the rhetoric is over the top, and I wish they had not said it quite that way. But still they are not afraid to speak out and that has to be appreciated. Contributions to a candidate or the party are required and welcome- we would have difficulty existing without contributions. But we also need people who will speak up for candidates and causes and sometimes I think that is more important than people who give money and never tell anyone who they are supporting and why. Keep it going Kris, PDiddie and all the others.

Money ain't everything. How about those with limited means that have been so fed up with Republicans that they have given of their time to the Party and to candidates! They have as much a right to speak as anyone who writes a check!

Frankly, I am sick and tired of people saying that only through contributions does one "earn" a voice in this process. Let's hear it for the volunteers!

Posted by: Stace at May 14, 2005 07:32 PM

Stace is so right! I didn't have much money to give, but I donated small amounts to several campaigns. More importantly I spent more hours than I can count volunteering and registering voters. You would have to know my full legal name in order to determine the funds I contributed, but there is no public record of the time I contributed during election season and post-election seasons. Many volunteers have worked hard to get this blog going and keep it vibrant. We're still volunteering.
