Ron and I attended the DFH picnic yesterday and had an absolute ball! We saw so many people we know. Lyn Wall was there as was PDiddie, Mike Chappelle, Bill Crosier, Lee Taylor, Randy Scott, Sarah Gonzales, The Turneys, Gerry Birnberg and a whole host of other people! Also present were Barbara Radnofsky, Chris Bell, Richard Morrison and a few other "celebrities", I think. Ron and I were busy circulating a petition to lobby the Texas Legislature to pass a law requiring paper ballots on every electronic voting machine in Texas. We also handed out Iraqi Notebooks, flyers for the Halliburton Shareholders protest and the flyer for the U.S. Department of Peace. Everybody looked to be having a great time. Food and drink was aplenty and as ever, the heat was stifling! People didn't seem to mind the heat, though. They were eating and drinking and conversing with each other and seemed to be having a hey old day. The kiddos were running around busting Tom DeLay pinatas. There was a blow up doll of George Bush (NO NOT THAT KIND) for people to punch and kick. I landed a kick square in the tiny little cojones of that doll! LOL! Laid him out flat! People even brought their dogs! Booths were set up everywhere representing different Democratic groups and candidates. I absolutely LOVE Democratic functions! People are so friendly and laid back. When we were circulating our petition and handing out flyers, not one person was rude or acted too busy to take the flyers or sign the petition. Of course, I realize, we were among like minded people at the event, but it was refreshing not to be cussed out or rebuked!
Anyway, obviously a tremendous amount of work went into making this event a success and a success it was. My most sincere congratulations and thanks go out to every single person who had a hand in coordinating this event.
My only regret is that the blueberry pie we brought got eaten up before I got a piece! Rats! I'll just have to go out and buy another one and eat the whole thing!
Being new to the whole political thing, it has been a great pleasure and honor for me to be associated with such a great group of people. Kudos to all who showed up at this event and who continue to show up at other events to fight for democracy.
