Volunteers are needed for the Memorial Day May 30 event below:
SAN JACINCTO DEMOCRATIC VETERANS BRIGADE
MEMORIAL DAY SERVICE
FOR U.S. SERVICEMEN KILLED IN IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN
At noon on Memorial Day, 30 May, a ceremony will be held in Sam Houston Park in downtown Houston to honor the sacrifices of those U.S. servicemen and women killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. The event, which is organized by the San Jacinto Democratic Veterans Brigade (SJDVB) and co-sponsored by many Democratic Party organizations within the Harris County area, will consist of reading the names of each fallen soldier as a small American flag bearing the casualty’s name, unit, and home state is placed in the ground. A small Texas flag will be included for those lost from Texas. Counting both conflicts, there are currently over 1700 US military casualties. The flags will be arranged in formation, similar to the arrangement of graves in the Arlington and the Houston National Cemeteries. The ceremony, whose theme is “Let Their Sacrifices Be Counted!,” will begin at noon on Memorial Day and end when all names have been read (about 5 PM).
Public Officials are invited to join us in reading names, or placing flags. Arrangements to do so can be made by calling or emailing Capt. (Ret.) Jim Rine below.
On May 31st, the flags will be on display around the gazebo area in Sam Houston Park from 8 AM to 6 PM so those working in downtown Houston can visit and walk among the flags.
The SJDVB is an organization formed in 2004 to promote veterans issues within the Harris County Democratic Party.
Additional information concerning the event on May 30-31 can be obtained from Jim Rine at 281 414 1386 or at sanjacsec@yahoo.com .
