Gay Marriage "Threatens" National Security
Who knew the two were linked? Maybe this is what the Lege had in mind when it passed HJR 6.
According to Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA):
I would argue that the future of our country hangs in the balance because the future of marriage hangs in the balance. Isn't that the ultimate homeland security, standing up and defending marriage?
I came across the above quote in the Harrisburg Magazine.
I guess he must really be upset by the fact that Elton John and his partner David Furnish have announced plans to marry. Britain will begin allowing civil partnerships between gay couples December 5, and partners will receive the same tax breaks available to married couples.
Oh no! We all better get to an undisclosed location fast. Apparently the "phantom gay menace" is greater than terrorism. I guess that means we will be on "Level Red" for "severe threat of gay marriage attacks." Be vigilant, and get your emergency preparedness kits ready. As always, report any "suspicious marriages" to the Texas Legislature or the US Congress for immediate legislative action and/or constitutional amendments.
I would like to know just how insecure does one's marriage have to be in order to be "threatened" by someone else's marriage?
Personally, I believe if one's marriage is so weak that it will be rent asunder by homosexuals marrying (or having civil unions), then there are probably some other fundamental issues the couple needs to sort out.
I'll get worried when gay marriages start toppling buildings and killing thousands of innocent people. Until then, I think we have much bigger issues to address -- health care, deficits, environment, education, something called international relations, etc.

Once again, this issue of civil unions or gay marriage is merely a distraction from the much more important issues of education, healthcare, the economy, civil rights, labor rights, invasion of Iraq etc etc etc. The only people who are worried about gays getting married are the far right wing, ignorant redneck, bible thumping, religiously insane cretins living in this state and other states in the good ole U.S.A.
I couldn't care less if gays and lesbians get married. It has no bearing on the health of my marriage. Committed partners in a gay/lesbian relationship should be allowed to marry and have all the benefits that heterosexual couples have. They should be allowed to adopt children if they want to as well. How in the hell does that affect any of us, hmmmmm?!
You know, I have thought for awhile now that people are DEVOLVING. I really think for the vast majority of people it may be true. It seems collectively, as a species, we are not evolving anymore. We are going backward in our way of thinking and acting. It won't be long before we are swinging in the trees, eating bananas and throwing shit at one another.
Why is it so difficult for humanity to treat one another with loving kindness and forgiveness? Why must we kill one another and steal from one another? Why can't everybody just leave everybody else the hell alone and mind their own business? What is this lust for power and money?
I don't get it. Does it have anything to do with having a penis and testosterone running through the body?! Is it faulty brain chemistry in certain individuals that makes them want to blow up their neighbors and steal their wealth and natural resources? What is it?! Is it both?! Thank God I have a vagina. I have helped to create life....twice. I have carried babies to term. I have felt them move within me. I have gone through the pain of labor and delivered two babies. I have laughed with my children and cried with them and been angry and frustrated with them. I have watched them grow and learn. I have watched them stumble and fall, and I have watched them get back up and try again. How on earth can anyone kill another human being and think nothing of it?! How can anyone kill a child and think nothing of it?! The only thing MAN seems to be able to do is destroy and kill! Why is this?! Men only have a small part in creating life in my opinion, however, I believe most men love their children and want to protect and nurture them. Why then, do some men (and it is primarily men) want to destroy life and possess the things of other men?! Explain that to me.
In the meantime...........banana, anyone?

The connection between terrorism and gay marriage is irrational fear. Linking the two is a cynical tactic to try to exploit fear. Haven't we already heard that animal rights and environmental activists are topping the lists of potential terrorists? That kind of sheer madness only makes sense in the context of keeping people blinded and afraid. One thing's for sure... this battle over the rights of gay couples has NOTHING to do with protecting the "sanctity" of marriage.

Marc,
I really appreciate getting things like this that aren't in the usual news sources. You are all doing such great pieces (with links) and becoming a vital source of information for Democrats. Reading this blog as often as I can daily has become a huge help for me as I struggle to keep up. Thanks!

When I said that John Cornyn is the dumbest member of the Senate, I forgot about Rick Santorum. They could be the Bobbsey Twins of stupidity.
If Santorum thinks the future of this country hangs in the balance because of marriage--the heterosexual kind, because that's the only legal kind we've got--why isn't he out there trying to persuade his straight Republican brothers and sisters who love their country to stay married instead of divorcing each other in such appalling numbers--50%, some say. We could bring all of our young men and women home from Iraq and Afghanistan and Cuba and Saudi Arabia and Colombia and the Rio Grande Valley and Crawford, Tex. and set them to guard court houses all over the country. Before couples could get in there to file for divorce, they'd have to show 10 pieces of identification, 5 of them color photographs of the couple and at least 3 of them household receipts to show that they really tried to make the marriage work. Then in the courthouse they'd have to listen to a 30-minute illustrated talk on the sanctity of marriage delivered by Donald Trump and one of his wives or Hugh Hefner and a couple of his or maybe JLo or Tammy Faye Baker or some other exemplar of heterosexual marriage. Someone to SET US AN EXAMPLE.
I know, and so do the rest of you, plenty of gay couples who don't threaten anyone except the twisted, miserable, self-righteous Rick Santorums, Tom DeLays, Pat Robertsons, Jerry Falwells, George Bushes, John Cornyns of the world who wouldn't be anything--they'd be invisible-- if they couldn't be mean and vicious and bullying. These are the people who, if there is an Armageddon, which I doubt, will fry in one of those Bonfires of the Vanities and make a flame large enough to light up
the longest Gay Pride Parade the world has ever seen. I hope we all live to see it.

As usual, Muriel seems to "have a way with words..." I can only add that the rather large flame she describes in her comments will be greeted with enthusiasm worldwide!!! I hope to have a front row seat.

The greatest threat to the sanctity of traditional marriage is domestic violence and incest, and I don't see any fundies trying to solve those problems, outside of blaming the victims.

...and another thing: the stupid,mean-minded Republican Lege had time to damn that dangerous, vile institution of gay marriage and to give itself another boost in pay, but it doesn't have time to solve the problem of funding education in the state that spends so little on schools and teachers that most kids in Texas, Randy, probably don't even know what "sanctity" and "domestic" and "incest" mean. For that matter, I doubt that Martha Wong knows what those words mean, either. This morning on NPR, she was giggling (GIGGLING!) over the fact that the courts would have to settle our problems with school finance. Obviously, you don't have to be smart to be a Repug member of the Lege. You just have to have pockets covering every inch of your pants and the instincts of a con-man to keep them filled.(I hear Tom DeLay gives lessons.)Democrats, on the other hand, have to be smart enough to expose the pockets. In spite of Peterson's Wednesday cartoon in the Chron, Ronnie Earle is trying as hard as he can.
