Race to the Bottom
The Texas House just tentatively approved the most blatant Republican attack on the poor, middle class, rural whites, Latinos, African Americans, and others; an education bill that does little for the majority of Texas children. Choosing to support the wealthiest school districts, while tacking on more unfunded mandates to poor school districts that stand to bankrupt them, as well as ignoring needs for increased Bilingual/ESL funding, the Republican-controlled Texas House of Representatives is proving who it is they work for, and it's not the people of Texas.
A majority of Texans did not allow this to happen quietly. Various organizations, leaders, bloggers, and newspaper columnists (including Carlos Guerra of SA Express-News) have challenged the Republicans for proposing a plan that only benefits the wealthiest.
According to the Legislative Budget Board, the tax burden for the vast majority of Texas households (those making less that $100,000 per year) will increase greatly if the House supports the companion tax bill. Property tax cuts will only benefit the wealthiest school districts and citizens, while those in poor school districts will see little savings. Increases in the sales tax rate (up to almost 10% in Houston) in this awful Bush economy will only decimate households with the least resources.
Again, I say, the Republicans have declared a CLASS WAR against the majority of Texans--plain and simple. It is time for a majority of Texans to rise up and take on the Republicans. We have made our voices heard to a Republican majority that refuses to listen to us this year, but as 2006 rolls around, Democrats must use these opportunities the Republicans provide us as political capital to recapture those voters that we have lost. Texans will certainly be looking for an alternative to what they have now. We must let Texans know that Democrats hold the ideas and the drive to build toward prosperity--a drive that includes all Texans and not just those with big checkbooks. Let's start our campaign TODAY!
