Businesses in Memphis Told Not to Display Anti-Bush Signs

John Gasquet is the owner of Empire Coffee in Memphis, Tennessee. He says that he was contacted by someone claiming to be a federal agent prior to a visit by President Bush, who is on his 60-day tour to promote his Social Security plan, and told to not put any signs in his shop window that might be negative towards the president.

Gasquet said that he was bothered that someone from the federal government would make such a request. Gasquet, had not planned to display any political signs. Gasquet who is a veteran, believed his job as a soldier was to defend the Constitution and that his First Amendment rights had been violated. He ended up posting a sign that said, he had been contacted by a federal agent who had advised not to post anti-Bush signs in his shop window and that "We would like to remind the agent of our first amendment rights." Other businesses in Memphis said that they had also been contacted and asked not to post anything anti-Bush during his visit.

Efforts are now being made to try and identify the person or persons who are responsible for making the calls to the Memphis-area businesses.
